My new exhibition The Violet Hour opens at His Majesty’s Theatre, Aberdeen tomorrow evening courtesy of Grampian Hospitals Art Trust! It will then run until mid-May. Pretty exciting!
Taking as it’s start point my interest in the detournement of Debord/Jorn and the cut ups of Burroughs I initially began by combining Courbet with himself. In time this developed into mixing various old masters with symbolic objects before finally having the scenes reenacted and repurposed by posed models.
At this time specific phrases from T S Eliot’s the Wasteland were cutting into my consciousness and further avenues of meaning to my ideas.
As with Eliot’s greatest poem, many of these paintings are simultaneously elusive, illusive and allusive.
Recent days have seen a flurry of frantic sketchbook scribbling and reflection, which for now has culminated in some new Cannibalising Courbet studies, as a way of formulating how to realise the scribbled ideas.
